Program Description

Linguistics is the scientific study of language, how we speak, understand, and use words. In this program you will explore sounds (phonetics), word formation (morphology), sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics), and language in society (sociolinguistics). You will learn to analyse speech, conduct simple language research, and present findings clearly. Studying linguistics builds strong communication, research, and creative skills that open pathways into writing and journalism, education and teaching, museum and cultural work, content and media production, and roles in language technology and creative industries. If you enjoy languages, storytelling, and understanding people, linguistics gives you practical tools to turn curiosity about language into rewarding careers in Ghana and beyond.

Aims and Objectives

  • Develop accurate phonetic transcription skills using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) on at least 15 speech samples

  • Master basic analysis of syntax and morphology to describe sentence and word structure in Ghanaian languages

  • Understand sociolinguistic factors by designing and completing three mini field studies on language use in local communities

  • Create and present clear research reports and multimedia presentations using digital tools (e.g., audio clips, charts, WordPress)

  • Build foundational language-technology skills by completing one practical project using corpus search or basic scripting

Why Choose This Program?

  • Strong communication and writing careers

Linguistics trains you for journalism, content creation, editing and copywriting — skills needed across Ghanaian media and publishing.

  • Cultural and museum opportunities

Knowledge of language and culture fits roles in museums, cultural centres and community outreach where storytelling matters.

  • Transferable creative skills

You gain research, analysis and digital content skills that transfer to creative direction, teaching and design teams.

  • Growing tech demand

Language skills are sought in localisation, basic NLP, and speech projects—useful as Ghana’s tech scene expands.

  • Practical industry links

Students can access internships and project work with media houses, schools, museums and local tech startups.

Skills Students Will Acquire

  • Record and analyse speech, produce IPA transcriptions and visualise sounds with Praat for clear phonetic evidence.

  • Use corpus-search tools (e.g., AntConc) and introductory Python to find patterns in texts and prepare language datasets.

  • Capture interviews and speech with microphones and edit audio using Audacity or Adobe Audition for research and media.

  • Time-align speech, annotate recordings with ELAN and summarise findings in spreadsheets for reproducible research.

  • Create articles, web posts and multimedia using Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress for outreach and portfolio building.

Tools and Resources Students Will Use

  • Praat (phonetic analysis)

  • ELAN (annotation)

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

  • WordPress (web publishing)
