Program Description

Statistics studies how to collect, organise, analyse and interpret data from scientific experiments and natural phenomena. In this program you will learn probability, descriptive and inferential statistics, data collection methods, experiment design, and applications in biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. Practical work includes laboratory measurements, data handling with spreadsheets and introductory statistical software, and scientific reporting. Graduates can pursue careers as research scientists, laboratory technicians, environmental scientists, science teachers, or quality control analysts in Ghana’s universities, government agencies, industry and NGOs. This program builds strong mathematical reasoning, critical thinking and practical data skills that open doors to research and many science-related jobs.

Aims and Objectives

  • Develop proficiency in collecting and cleaning scientific data from experiments and fieldwork using standard protocols.

  • Master descriptive and inferential statistical techniques and apply them to biology, chemistry and physics problems.

  • Understand research methodology and design experiments that produce valid, reproducible results.

  • Create clear scientific reports and visualisations that communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Operate basic laboratory instruments and follow safety procedures while maintaining accurate documentation and calibration records.

Why Choose This Program?

  • High demand in science and industry

Statistical skills are needed across research, environmental monitoring, industry quality control and public health in Ghana.

  • Strong foundation for further study

Prepares students for degrees in statistics, biostatistics, environmental science, and research-focused postgraduate programs.

  • Practical, hands-on learning

Combines lab experiments, field data collection and computer-based analysis for real-world experience.

  • Good career variety

Leads to roles such as laboratory technician, research assistant, quality control analyst and science educator.

  • Industry links and internships

Opportunities to partner with local labs, environmental agencies and universities for placements and projects.

Skills Students Will Acquire

  • Design surveys and experiments; use sampling methods and data logging tools to gather reliable scientific data.

  • Perform descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing and regression analysis using spreadsheets and statistical packages.

  • Conduct basic lab measurements, follow safety protocols, and record observations accurately for analysis.

  • Create clear tables, charts and written reports that summarise methods, results and conclusions for stakeholders.

  • Plan experiments, control variables, calculate sample sizes and interpret results within the scientific method framework.

Tools and Resources Students Will Use

  • Microsoft Excel (or LibreOffice Calc)

  • R (and RStudio)

  • SPSS or Jamovi/JASP

  • Python (pandas, matplotlib)
